Character History:
Rosario Aguilar was born in Mexico City, Mexico on August 29, 1987. Her childhood was the epitome of “taking a village to raise a child.” Her father, Ernesto Aguilar was a paladin of Pelor, while her mother, Raina was a cleric of Lathander, and high priestess of a commune of sorts that at the time was living just outside of the borders of Mexico City. They were a nomadic people, mainly women, who would offer shelter and protection to anyone who wished to join their ranks, and was made up mostly of clerics and priests of all different religious sects. The Sisters, as they called themselves, were an old holdover from Faerun, where their ancestors had originated. Being descended from Shadowkind – her grandmother specifically, who had crossed through the Veil in 1938 – and spending most of her time among them and other religions, Rosario was raised in the spirit of doing good for others, regardless of who they are and the situation they’re in.
The commune where she was raised was nomadic, moving from city to city and only staying so long as they weren’t stepping on local toes. The Sisters taught all of their followers to respect the laws of the land they were living in, which usually wasn’t a problem as they weren’t exactly advocating a criminal lifestyle, however when it came to taking in women or children who were in abusive or dangerous situations, they had to be a little more careful. Most of the life lessons taught to her were taught by her mother, due to her father’s responsibilities as a knight and wanting to keep his family safe and away from danger, but eventually he was transferred to a closer branch of the organization so that he could be closer to his daughter. Faith was a central pillar to her life from a young age, and while her parents never pressured her to choose one deity over the other, she leaned more towards Lathander, as that is the one she was exposed to much. She also was more of a cleric than a paladin, but when she came of age, she still wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps, so she went to England to become a squire at eighteen.
She took the option of having a longer squiring period than most, taking some time to go to school and complete her education, and becoming best friends with Beatrice St. Peter-Blair but when she became an active knight, she struggled with the nature of the missions and being ill prepared for what was being asked of her. She grew up on her father’s stories of glory and honor, but she didn’t truly comprehend the violence that was involved in saving the day. After one particularly bad mission, where they stopped the monster but hadn’t managed to actually save anyone, Rosario went to her mentor and declined being promoted into the Knights, knowing she wasn’t ready for the responsibility.
She followed Bea down to Cape Town when she transferred to the branch office there, not wanting to go home a disappointment and struggled with trying to find her place in the world. While Bea did her knight business, Rosario put herself to work at one of the local Shadowkind refugee camps and wound up talking to a lot of them about faith and trying to find something to center her more than her devotion to Lathander was doing. Through them she did some soul searching, and found a goddess that better suited the place she was in in her life with Eldath. Wherever Bea would go in her travels, Rosario would go with her, her natural nomadic inclinations matching well with that of her undine nature. Eventually friendship turned into something more and she and Bea entered a committed relationship.
And when Keijen Blade drowns an entire stadium of people in a sea of lava, and the Knights are recalled to London, Rosario goes with her, more prepared for the fight that’s coming than before.
Also because Bea refused to leave her behind, but details.
Personality and Psychology:
The most prominent tool in Rosario’s wheelhouse is her faith. Whether it’s Pelor or Lathander or Eldath, believing in the gods has never been a question in her heart, but it was a matter of finding the right one. She’s always been kind and considerate of others and in her heart she’s always wanted to help people. She also wants to make her parents proud, as she knows that she’s carrying both of their legacies on her shoulders. In the case of her mother and grandmother, she’s going to eventually be the leader of their clan when her mother passes on. She wants to know that she’ll be a strong leader and take care of her people. Her mother and father raised her with the example of using faith as an anchor for your life and even if she doesn’t follow their gods, she still feels best when she’s following their example.
Having grown up in a collective more so than a traditional family has made her very open to other people’s viewpoints and trying to connect with them on a personal level. Her childhood often involved new people coming in who were from rougher walks of life than her, and learning to approach them with empathy and compassion was impressed on her from a young age, and she took to it like a fish to water.
It’s also taken her a long time to figure out the way she fits best in the world. While the tenants of Eldath aren’t those of a warrior, she’s determined to let her pacifisms be her strength rather than a crutch to lean on. Extending a hand in friendship first, rather than harm, is how her mother and grandmother have always approached the world, and she wants to follow that example, and the example of her deity as best she can. She knows that there is little glory in peace, but she would rather do no harm first. She’s developed her skills so that she can still provide support in combat when needed, making her ideal at working as a team, rather than striking out on her own.
At the end of the day, Rosario is a team player first, glory seeking hero never, and is just trying to stick to her beliefs and make the world a better place. Whether or not coming back to the Knights will help or harm that endeavor remains to be seen, but she’s not going to stand by and watch the world end either.
